Touring Morocco by Bike (6.2): Imilchil – Dades Gorge

Imilchil to Dades Gorge

Imilchil – Dades Gorge

Imilchil – Dades Gorge (142km)
Dades Gorge, I was heading to the bottom of the gorge from deep inside, there are several impressive view points in this gorge, but getting ordinary down to the bottom. Most of the tourists stay only near the entrance, sometimes I didn’t even stop for those places that they found interesting.

Day 2 (60KM)
In the morning, several kids came around me when I was about to start, they said they were heading to school but it was the direction to the pass, I was little bit shocked because it may take 2-3 hours to walk to the school. They begged for money and candies as usual, which of course I refused. One kid had a bicycle and asked me to help him to pump the type, but then he tried to steal my bike tool while I was pumping, I was so angry and scolded at him! Then I remembered how far they needed to walk to the school, um… then I became calm…

The road is 30km gently downhill until Msemrir, houses are neat, road condition is better, it seems it is more developed in this side on the mountain. The road also does not cross through the village, compare to the tenterhooks to meet the wild kids for the previous days, it was much quiet, and I started to feel it was too quiet… At Msemrir, there is a big and lively high school. Students dressed tidy and spoke ‘konnichiwa’ with a smile, I knew that is the place tourists will come.

I had my lunch at La Vallee Des Pommes, took a look for their rooms and chatted with the staffs, it should be a nice place to stay. There is a rough path from Msemrir to Toudra Gorges directly, which sounds quite adventurous.

After Msemrir, the road goes long a river and then climb uphill to the shoulder, there is a magnificent 360° river turn, what is the most impressive is there are some houses and fields along the river, which is almost 100m down in the gorge. Following the road, I met a group of motorcyclists, passed several pretty villages, then I reached a popular destination for most tourists – a high and extremely narrow gorge, started next to the river, climbed to the shoulder and overlooked the gorge from the top again. Then, a majestic hairpin road leads you to Ait Oudinar, the village with plenty of hotels and campsites, you can even find a luxury castle hotel there.

The whole Dades Gorge is so scenic and dramatic, it is a shame if you only stay near the lower part of the gorge.a
